Family structure and early vocabulary acquisition

In the study influences on the productive vocabulary are examined regarding 16 month old children with, or with no siblings at home (n = 121). A parental report form, CDI, was used as instrument.Hypotheses regarding effects of different interaction environments were derived from the literature, and significant effects on the productive vocabulary were found; The first effect was that the productive vocabulary of children with siblings was significantly lower (p < 0.02), if the children use few communicative gestures.The second effect was that the productive vocabulary of children with no siblings was significantly (p < 0.05) higher if the child got a high score on games and routines.
